Carnauba wax, obtained from the leaves of palm trees in Brazil, is mainly composed of wax esters, higher alcohols, hydrocarbons and resinous substances. It is light brown to grayish yellow powder, flake or irregular wax block with hard and brittle texture. It is mild and smelly, but almost tasteless. The saponification value is 78~95, and the iodine value is 5 ~ 14. carnauba wax does not rancidity. Soluble in warm chloroform and warm toluene, slightly soluble in boiling ethanol (95%), almost insoluble in water.
